Project Alpha
-
(National Program – Open Date) The March of Dimes and
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. began collaboratively implementing
Project Alpha in 1980. Designed to provide young men with current and
accurate information about teen pregnancy prevention, Project Alpha
consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted
by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brothers. The three goals of Project
Alpha programs are: (1) Sharing Knowledge by combating ignorance and
fear with factual information. (2) Changing Attitudes by providing
motivation toward positive changes in sexual behavior. (3) Providing
Skills by creating a sense of empowerment and self-esteem.

Program – Open Date)
Brothers of OPL counsel youth on the importance of post-secondary
education while introducing them to promising professions. Through these
established relationships, students and their families are provided
information on preparing for the rigors of college study, college
entrance, financial aid and available scholarships.
A Voteless People is a Hopeless People -
(National Program – Open Date)
This voter registration slogan developed by Alpha Phi Alpha in the
1930’s still rings true today. OPL joins the Fraternity as it continues
its vigorous program to register, educate, and get voters to the polls
every election day.
Mentoring Partnership
with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta -
(National Organization Partner – Open Date).
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and BBBS formed a national partnership in
1990 to match youth with Fraternity adult volunteers. Brothers of
Omicron Phi Lambda (OPL) proudly serve as mentors to youth in the
Greater Atlanta area, preparing them to be confident and responsible
adults as well as lending them a needed ear.
Parklane Elementary - Back to School Assistance –
(August)
The unfortunate reality is that many young children return to the new
school year inadequately prepared. OPL tries to combat this realty with
its school supply donation to a neighboring Elementary, easing the
transition for many kids.
Pharaoh’s Cup Golf Tournament –
(October)
Endorsed by African American Golfer’s Digest, the
tournament’s proceeds will be donated to the Omicron Phi Lambda
Education Foundation. The Foundation, which is a 501c3 organization,
provides scholarships to area High School male Seniors to assist in
meeting their college funding needs.
“Pick Up” on Spreading Oak –
(November) For over a decade,
Brothers of OPL have spearheaded an annual community-wide service
project in and around Spreading Oak Drive in Southwest Atlanta. Monetary
donations, can goods and other non-perishable items are collected and
distributed to local organizations. The United Negro College Fund, The
Carrie Steele Pitts Home and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home are
among the beneficiaries.
Thanksgiving & Christmas Day Baskets –
(November &
December)
Annually, the chapter “adopts” needy families in the Atlanta area,
providing them with toys, clothes, food and a sense of hope during the
holidays.
Empty Stocking Fund
–
(December)
Brothers of OPL team with Southside High School Junior ROTC cadets
collecting funds from the public - contributing collections to the Empty
Stocking Fund administrators for the purchase and distribution of toys
around the winter holidays.
American Cancer Society/South Fulton County Relay for Life –
(April)
The Brothers of OPL participate in American Cancer Society's
countrywide, annual fundraising effort. The OPL team then celebrates its
effort by joining other fundraisers for a night festivity including
music, food, games, and an overnight "relay" - all for a good cause.
March of Dimes –
(National Organization Partner – April).
The Brothers of OPL have taken up the charge given by the National
Organization to support the March of Dimes as it finds way to prevent
premature births and increase the viability rate of infants that are
born prematurely. Along with fund-raising efforts, the Brothers also
contribute time to MOD, lending support to their annual WalkAmerica
drive through assistance with walk-day logistics and set up.
Ron W. Sims Scholarship & Henry Montgomery Scholarship

(May/June)
“Manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind” are the aims of
Alpha Phi Alpha. OPL demonstrates this precept through awarding two
scholarships to deserving, college-bound young men annually.
Administered through the Omicron Phi Lambda Education Foundation, the
first of these scholarships were awarded in 1996 (Sims) - 2006 saw the
addition of the Henry Montgomery scholarship.
